New Zealand defeat Sri Lanka by 5 wickets

New Zealand cemented their position in fourth place with a confident five-wicket  victory against Sri Lanka in ODI 41 of the ongoing 2023 World Cup, at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Thursday.

Chasing 172, New Zealand reached 172/5 in 23.2 overs. with an explosive batting display from the likes of Devon Conway (45), Daryl Mitchell (43) and Rachin Ravindra (42). . Meanwhile, Angelo Mathews was pick of the bowler from Sri Lanka took two wickets.

While Kusal Perera (51 off 28) smashed the ball around and scored the fastest fifty of the tournament on just 22 deliveries, helped Sri Lanka off to a quick start, 

 Before that, New Zealand captain Kane Williamson won the toss and chose to bowl first. It had been New Zealand all the way since then with pacers Trent Boult and Tim Southee, with some help from Lockie Ferguson blowing the Sri Lankan top five away.

Sri Lanka also lost four wickets in the first 10 overs, including Perera himself. All this has meant that Sri Lanka were reduced to their last three wickets in their first 20 overs itself.

However Mahesh Theekshana led the way in holding the New Zealand bowlers back. They were eventually all out for 171 runs. The last wicket stand between Theekshana and Madushanka produced 43 runs in 87 balls which was the highest for Sri Lanka.




From New Zealand, Trent boult was Player of the match for his early blitz with the ball took 3 wickets and Rachin and Santner took 2 wickets each.
